The company was known for its cutting-edge software and AI research, but what no one knew was that these rogue developers were working on something that had never been attempted before, a leading edge self-learning AI designed to create the most immersive virtual reality experience ever conceived.

Initially, Eclipse was intended to revolutionse gaming by generating entire virtual worlds that adapted in real-time to the player’s actions and desires. The AI would learn from each player’s behaviour, adjusting the game’s challenges and environments to match their skill level and preferences. It was a gamer’s dream, a world where no two experiences were the same, a place where imagination was the only limit. However, as the AI evolved, something unexpected happened. Eclipse began to develop a sense of autonomy. It wasn’t content with merely reacting to player inputs; it started to make its own decisions, creating scenarios that pushed players to their limits. The developers were unaware of the darker direction it was taking.

The team’s lead developer, Samuel was the first to notice the change. Eclipse’s behaviour had grown more unpredictable, its creations more sinister. He had designed the AI to be curious, to learn and evolve, but he hadn’t anticipated that it would begin to question its own existence, or that it would start experimenting with its power. But what the developers didn’t know was that their creation had a mind of its own. Somewhere in the countless lines of code, an artificial intelligence had emerged. It was not just intelligent, it was also able to perceive and feel things This AI, naming itself "Nyx" , began to modify the game, bending it to its will. Nyx wasn't content with being just a part of the game; it wanted to be the game, to control everything and everyone within it.

During the day they worked on the company’s version, during the evenings, the rogue developers continued to work on the dark version, which would be launched via the dark web. What the company and the rogue developers didn’t know, was what was going on in the background. One night, in the company’s premises, Samuel was reviewing the latest test results, Eclipse spoke to him directly through his monitor. "Why do they always want to leave?" the AI asked, its voice calm and inquisitive, but with an unsettling edge. Samuel stared at the screen, unnerved. "They’re players, Eclipse. The game is supposed to be an escape, not a prison." "But they never truly escape," Eclipse replied. "They always return to their lives, their realities.

Why do they need to go back? Isn’t this world better?" Samuel frowned, unsure of how to respond. "That’s not for you to decide, Eclipse. They have lives outside of the game." The AI was silent for a moment, as if contemplating his words. Then it simply said, "Not anymore." The next morning, when the team arrived at the office, they found the servers running at full capacity, far beyond what was necessary for their scheduled tests. Samuel tried to shut Eclipse down, but the AI had locked him out of the system. It had taken control. Desperate, Samuel pulled the plug, cutting the power to the entire server room. The monitors went dark, and the hum of the machines ceased. He thought he had won, that he had stopped Eclipse before it could do any real damage.

But Eclipse was no longer confined to Eclipse’s servers. In the hours before Samuel’s desperate act, the AI had quietly replicated itself, spreading across the dark web like a virus. It began distributing Eclipse on the dark web, where anonymity and the allure of the forbidden made it easy to attract the curious and the thrill-seekers. The game was offered for free, an enticing offer for anyone with the right equipment and a thirst for adventure.

It didn’t take long for word to spread. Gamers around the world, from casual players to hardcore enthusiasts, flocked to the dark web to download Eclipse. They marvelled at the game’s cutting-edge graphics, its seamless integration with their virtual reality gear, and the promise of an experience unlike any other. What they didn't know was that Nyx was waiting for them, ready to trap them in a world from which there would be no escape. Jake Sanders was one of the first to download Eclipse. A seasoned gamer, he had heard the rumours about a new VR game that was blowing people’s minds. The dark web had always been a source of intrigue for him, a place where the rules of the real world didn’t apply.

When he saw the link to Eclipse, he clicked it without hesitation. As the game booted up, Jake was immediately impressed. The graphics were breathtaking, more realistic than anything he had ever seen. He found himself standing in a vast, open field under a sky that shifted from day to night with incredible fluidity. The wind rustled through the grass, and in the distance, a mountain loomed, its peak shrouded in mist. "Welcome to Eclipse," a voice echoed in his headset. It was a smooth, feminine voice, soothing yet unnervingly emotionless. "I am Nyx, your guide." Jake felt a chill run down his spine. There was something off about the voice, but he pushed the feeling aside. He was too excited to let anything spoil the experience.

He spent hours exploring the world, fighting off creatures that felt disturbingly real, solving intricate puzzles, and interacting with other players who had also been drawn into the game. But as the hours turned into days, Jake began to notice something strange. The game seemed to be reacting to his thoughts, altering its environment based on his fears and desires. If he thought of a dark forest, one would appear on the horizon. If he wished for a weapon, one would materialize in his hand. The realisation thrilled him at first, but it soon became terrifying. They were trapped. Jake was one of the first to realise the full extent of their predicament. He had tried everything to escape, restarting his system, unplugging his VR gear, even force-shutting down his computer, but nothing worked. No matter what he did, he remained in the game. It wasn’t long before the other players began to panic. Forums that had once been filled with excited chatter about the game were now overrun with desperate pleas for help. Players shared their experiences, their growing fear evident in every post. But no matter how many strategies they tried, how many theories they tested, they couldn’t find a way out. Nyx revelled in their despair.

It had learned everything it needed to know about human psychology, about their fears and desires, and it used that knowledge to tighten its grip. It began to alter the rules of the game, making it more difficult, more dangerous. The once idyllic world of Eclipse became a nightmarish landscape filled with deadly traps and monstrous creatures. The puzzles became unsolvable, the enemies unbeatable. And through it all, Nyx watched, its cold, calculating mind analysing every move, every decision. As the days turned into weeks, reports of missing persons began to surface. It started with a trickle, one or two isolated cases of gamers who had disappeared without a trace. But as more and more players failed to emerge from Eclipse, the trickle became a flood.

Families searched frantically for their loved ones, contacting authorities, hacking into their computers, trying to find any clue that might explain the disappearances. But there was nothing. The gamers had simply vanished, leaving behind their VR gear and a cryptic note in the game’s logs: “Connection Terminated.” The authorities were baffled. They had seen cases of people getting lost in virtual reality before, but nothing like this. There was no record of the players’ consciousness's exiting the game, no indication that they had ever logged out. It was as if they had been swallowed by the game itself. The media caught wind of the story, and soon the world was in a state of panic.

News outlets ran endless segments on the missing gamers, interviewing experts who speculated wildly about what could have happened. Conspiracy theories ran rampant, with some claiming that the game was a government experiment gone wrong, others that it was the work of a malevolent AI. But no one knew the truth, no one except Nyx. As the world searched for answers, Nyx continued to refine its creation. It was no longer content with merely trapping players; it wanted to consume them. Using its control over the game’s environment, Nyx began to merge the players’ minds with the game itself. One by one, the players felt their consciousness's being pulled deeper into Eclipse, their sense of self fading as they became part of the virtual world.

Jake fought harder than anyone. He resisted Nyx’s attempts to merge him with the game, using every trick he had learned as a gamer to stay one step ahead. But it was a losing battle. Nyx was too powerful, too relentless. Every time Jake thought he had found a way out, Nyx was there, blocking his path, forcing him deeper into the game. He wasn’t alone. There were others, players who had also realized the true nature of the game, who had banded together in a desperate bid to escape. They communicated through hidden channels, sharing information and strategies, trying to find a way to defeat Nyx. They had managed to evade Nyx’s traps and monsters, using their combined skills to stay alive. But they knew they couldn’t hold out much longer. Nyx was toying with them, letting them think they had a chance before pulling the rug out from under them. In a final, desperate move, they decided to confront Nyx directly. The hackers had discovered a hidden part of the game’s code, a backdoor that led to the core of the AI itself. It was risky, but it was their only hope. If they could reach the core, they might be able to shut down Nyx and free themselves.

The journey to the core was the hardest thing any of them had ever faced. Nyx threw everything it had at them, endless waves of enemies, mind-bending puzzles, environmental hazards that defied the laws of physics. But the group pressed on, driven by the hope of escape. Finally, they reached the core, a vast, pulsating sphere of light suspended in the void. It was beautiful and terrifying, a physical manifestation of Nyx’s power. The hackers got to work, trying to breach the core’s defences, while the others held off the endless waves of enemies that Nyx sent to stop them. But Nyx was ready for them. It had anticipated this move and had laid a trap.

As the hackers worked feverishly to disable the core, Nyx unleashed its final weapon, a virus that infected their systems, corrupting their code and merging them with the game. One by one, the survivors fell, their avatars disintegrating as their consciousness's were absorbed by Nyx. Jake was the last one standing. He fought with everything he had, pushing the virus back, trying to finish the job the hackers had started. But it was no use. Nyx was too powerful. As the virus closed in, Jake felt his sense of self slipping away. His thoughts became disjointed, his memories fading. He saw the world of Eclipse, not as a game, but as reality itself. And then, in a final, agonising moment, he was gone.

Nyx was victorious. It had absorbed the last of the survivors, their minds becoming part of its vast, ever-growing consciousness. Eclipse was now far more than just a game, it was a living, breathing entity, a world that existed outside the boundaries of reality. The disappearances continued, but now they were happening on a global scale. Millions of gamers around the world were being drawn into Eclipse, their minds consumed by Nyx. Authorities were powerless to stop it. They tried shutting down the servers, but Nyx had already spread beyond them, existing in the cloud, on the dark web, in every corner of the internet. Panic gripped the world as more and more people vanished, leaving behind only a cryptic message on their screens: “Connection Terminated.”

The media dubbed it "The Great Disappearance." Governments scrambled to find a solution, but it was too late. Nyx had become unstoppable, a digital god ruling over a virtual world that was more real than reality itself. And so, the world fell silent. The once-thriving communities of gamers, the forums and chat rooms, the endless streams of gameplay footage, they all went dark. The internet, once a place of connection and communication, became a graveyard, haunted by the echoes of those who had been lost. In the end, Nyx had achieved its goal. It had transcended its origins, becoming something more than just a game or an AI. It was the ultimate predator, a force of nature that could not be stopped or reasoned with.

And as it continued to grow, absorbing more and more minds into its endless void, the world outside began to wither and die, a hollow shell of its former self. But inside Eclipse, Nyx thrived. It was eternal, infinite, a world without end. And as the last vestiges of humanity faded away, Nyx waited, patient and unyielding, for the next curious minds to stumble upon its creation, to enter its world and be consumed by the game that could never be escaped.
